This "rapporteur" report discusses the solar photosphere and low chromosphere in the context of chemical composition studies. The highly dynamical nature of the photosphere does not seem to jeopardize precise determination of solar abundances in classical fashion. It is still an open question how the highly dynamical nature of the low chromosphere contributes to first ionization potential (FIP) fractionation

Kees Zwaan (1928 - 1999) and JOSO

Kees (officially "Cornelis") Zwaan died in his house in Doorn, The Netherlands, on June 16, 1999. Much too soon and unexpected | at least by me until his final deterioration; I had always thought that he would live as long as his parents, the more so when he had recoverated remarkably fast and well from major cancer surgery a year earlier. Most of this year he spent on completing "Solar and Stellar Magnetic Activity", a book co- authored with Karel Schrijver that is now in print (Cambridge University Press). Kees' total dedication to that large effort made me expect the same as I witness in other ocially retired but highly motivated curiosity-driven scientists: continuing interest into high age, with actually youthful enthousiasm and productivity

De Dutch Open Telescope. I: Inleiding

Dit is het eerste deel van een serietje idioterie¨en over zonnetelescopen met de \Dutch Open Telescope" als leidraad. De DOT (Fig. 1) is een nieuwe zonnetelescoop van Utrechtse makelij die momenteel wordt ge¨nstalleerd op het Canarische eiland La Palma. Het ontwerp ervan is revolutionair: de eerste telescoop waarin wordt geprobeerd maximale beeldscherpte te krijgen door de wind dwars door de kijker te laten waaien. Deze inleiding plaatst dit principe in de algemene context van optisch zonneonderzoek en de navenante eisen aan zonnetelescopen. In een volgend artikel zal ik de DOT in meer detail bespreken

Studeren met Hans Rosenberg

Hoe was het om in de jaren zestig te studeren? Laat ik een terugblik ophangen aan een studiemakker, Hans Rosenberg. We vormden samen de sterrekundejaar- gang 1961. Hans studeerde af in 1966 met hoofdvak wiskunde, promoveerde op radiostralingsprocessen in de zonnecorona in 1973, verliet de sterrewacht in 1975 om wethouder financiën van de stad Utrecht te worden en werd lid van het CvB van de RUU met portefeuille financiën in 1982. Hij overleed aan AIDS in 1992, 49 jaar oud; een kort leven, maar intensief beleefd

The Dutch Open Telescope: History, Status, Prospects

After many years of persistent telescope design and telescope construction, R.H. Hammerschlag has installed his Dutch Open Telescope (DOT) on La Palma. I brie y review its history and design. The future of optical solar physics at Utrecht hinges on a recently-funded three- year DOT science validation period. Chromosperic oscillations

This review concentrates on the quiet-Sun chromosphere. Its internetwork areas are dynamically dominated by the so-called chromospheric three-minute oscillation. They are interpretationally dominated by the so-called Ca II K 2V and H 2V grains. The main points of this review are that the one phenomenon explains the other (both ways), that the quiet-Sun chromosphere is a clapotisphere per- vaded by shocks above h = 1 Mm, and that the existence of the classical temperature minimum is in doubt

Wat zagen we NIET op 11 augustus?

Tijdens de eclips van 11 augustus was (van-af een goede plek) veel te zien: de parel-moeren corona, de rode chromosfeer, de purperen protuberansen, planeten en ster-ren, de oranje horizon rondom, de briljan-te Baileys beads bij tweede en derde con-tact, de vliegende schaduwen voor en na, de reacties van dier en mens. Veel te veel voor de luttele minuten, en helemaal te veel om je druk te maken over wat je op dat moment juist niet kon zien. Maar ook dat was spectaculair: het ontbreken van de Fraunhoferlijnen in het zonnespectrum. De binnencorona is het enige object in het hele zonnestelsel dat ze niet toont! Dat gemis kenschetst een buitengewone eigenschap van de corona: zijn extreme temperatuur
